In-House Naval Architecture & Design — For Every Hull We Build or Refit

Design that serves the yard

Every hull we build or refit starts on the drawing board. Our in-house naval architecture and design exists to serve the yard — to turn an owner’s brief into a lines plan, a structure that will hold class-comparable scantlings, a layout that works at sea, and an interior that survives the tropics. We are not a standalone design studio chasing every project in the country; we draw the boats this yard builds, which means the drawings and the build never drift apart.

Lines, structure and class rules

The lines plan sets the boat’s character and its behaviour — how it sails, how it sits at anchor, how much it carries. From the lines we develop the structural drawings: keel, stem and sternpost, frame spacing and scantlings, fastening schedules, and the reinforcement a schooner rig demands. Where a build is intended for class, we design to class-comparable rules from the outset, so the structure is right the first time rather than reinforced after a surveyor’s visit. Marrying a traditional wooden hull to modern class thinking is a craft in itself.

Layout and interior

A good layout is invisible: guests never think about it because everything is where it should be. We draw the general arrangement around the boat’s purpose — cabins, saloon, galley, heads, dive deck or cargo hold — then the interior in detail: joinery that copes with humidity, service runs you can reach, air handling, and the VIP cabin owners actually want. Luxury phinisi interiors are designed here and built on the same site, so a change on the drawing is a conversation with the shipwright, not a letter to another company.

Design for build and refit alike

Design does not stop at newbuild. A refit needs drawings too — a re-worked layout, a new systems schematic, a restored rig plan. When an ageing boat comes in for

full restoration, the design desk draws the changes before the shipwrights cut anything. And on a fresh yacht-grade build, the design set is the contract’s backbone.

USD and process

Design is scoped by the project: a full newbuild design set is a defined package; refit drawings are quoted against the refit. Naval architecture and design for a build we are carrying out is part of the build; standalone design is quoted separately. As always, figures are in US dollars and follow the brief. Send us what you want the boat to do and we will start with the lines.

Bulukumba Shipyard is the regency newbuild-and-refit yard brand of Juara Holding Group (established 2015), a sister brand to Komodo Luxury. The yard sits in Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi — Butta Panrita Lopi, the land of the Konjo and Bugis panrita lopi master shipwrights who build and restore wooden phinisi hulls, from keel-laying to haul-out.
